The Wahiba, a huge desert of 10,000 square km. This is a real challenge for all but the perfect place to spend time with the Bedu who have inhabited this desert for centuries. The Omanis Bedus are very proud and hospitality is an important part of their way of life. You will be invited into nomadic camps, made of palm leaves, and perhaps meet some of the camel caravans that still traverse this desert – the Omanis are famous for breeding the best camels of the midle east. To avoid the heat of the day you will copy the Bedu and ride in the early morning and late afternoon / evening (or even at night), with long mid-day siestas. You ride south eastward for the most part, along tracks of compact sand which allow good progress, the Arab horses showing you what great stamina they have. Every evening the team of Wahiba Bedu will set up the mobile camp and prepare the food.
Riding hours are usually 3 hours morning time and 2 hours until sunset!
Our cook will provide delicious Omani Dinners along the trail, Majbos Also named Kabsa, this dish is rice mixed with saffron cooked with spicy red or white meat. Majboos translates to be engaged in Oman and is almost always served at special occasions like weddings and engagements!
Mashuai, Another delicious dish you will find in Oman is the mouth watering Mashuai! It is a dish consisting of roasted king fish and savoury lemon rice!!
Another popular street food in Oman is Mishkak, which is griled pieces of marinated meat, normally chicken, mutton or beef on long wooden sticks. Served hot with tamarind chutney, you can choose whether you want to eat it off the stick or with fresh Arab bread.
Halwa is a sticky, sweet gelatinous snack, made from brown sugar, honey, eggs and various spices. It has a lot of flavours, such as rose water, nuts, chocolate, etc. Some halwas are also made from the Omani dates. It takes quite a while to make as it is slowly boiled over a wood fire. Halwas can last over four months without losing any of its quality! It is often accompanied with Kahwa as another sign of hospitality.
Without forgetting Omani Kahwa wich is a very strong bitter coffee that is often served in tiny cups either with dates or halwa. Kahwa is made from freshly roasted ground coffee and flavoured with some cardamom!
